The bathroom has undergone a quiet revolution. Once treated as a purely functional room — tiles, a bath, a basin, and not much thought beyond that — it is now one of the most invested-in spaces in the home. Today's luxury bathroom is a private retreat, a place to decompress, and increasingly, a room that rivals the finest hotel spas in both design and experience.

At Studio Chenille, we design bathrooms that balance beauty with practicality, creating spaces that feel indulgent every single day — not just the day they are installed. Here are the ideas and approaches shaping the most beautiful bathrooms in the UK this year.

The Freestanding Bath: A Sculptural Centrepiece

Nothing defines a luxury bathroom quite like a freestanding bath. Positioned as the focal point of the room, a beautifully shaped freestanding bath elevates the entire space from functional to extraordinary.

The choice of shape sets the mood. A classic roll-top bath with ball-and-claw feet suits period properties and traditional schemes. For contemporary interiors, we favour organic, sculptural forms — smooth, curved basins in natural stone, composite materials, or cast mineral that feel as much like art as they do sanitaryware.

Placement matters enormously. A freestanding bath positioned centrally, or beneath a window with a view, creates a genuine sense of occasion. In our projects, we always consider sightlines — what do you see when you are lying in the bath? That view, whether it is a garden, a beautifully tiled wall, or a carefully framed window, becomes part of the daily ritual.

Practical considerations include adequate drainage access, underfloor heating beneath and around the bath (cold feet on cold tiles undermines the entire experience), and a floor-mounted or wall-mounted tap that complements the bath's form rather than competing with it.

Walk-In Showers: Open, Generous, and Beautiful

The walk-in shower has replaced the shower cubicle as the standard for luxury bathrooms. Frameless glass, minimal profiles, and generous proportions create a sense of openness that makes the entire bathroom feel larger.

For a truly luxurious shower experience, consider:

Drainage is a critical consideration. Linear drains set flush with the floor are the cleanest solution, allowing the shower area to flow seamlessly into the wider bathroom floor with a gentle gradient rather than a traditional shower tray step.

Vanity Design: Where Function Meets Beauty

The vanity area is where your bathroom needs to work hardest — it is used multiple times daily and must accommodate toiletries, towels, and grooming essentials while looking beautiful. The best vanity designs achieve this through smart storage and considered proportions.

Floating vanity units are our preferred choice for most projects. Mounted to the wall with no legs touching the floor, they create a visual lightness that makes the room feel more spacious, whilst providing ample concealed storage in drawers beneath. The floor beneath is left clear, making cleaning effortless and allowing underfloor heating to radiate unobstructed.

For the basin itself, countertop vessels in natural stone or fluted ceramic create a sculptural statement. Undermounted basins offer a cleaner line and are easier to keep tidy. The choice depends on the overall aesthetic — vessels for more decorative schemes, undermounts for minimalist spaces.

Double basins remain popular for master bathrooms shared by couples, though they are not always necessary. If the room is modest in size, a single generous basin with ample counter space often works better than two cramped basins side by side.

Lighting: The Difference Between Good and Exceptional

Bathroom lighting demands particular attention because it must be both functional and atmospheric — flattering at the mirror, practical in the shower, and capable of creating a calm, spa-like mood in the evening.

Backlit mirrors are now virtually essential in luxury bathrooms. An LED halo behind the mirror provides even, shadow-free illumination that is ideal for grooming, whilst adding a soft ambient glow that looks stunning, particularly in the evening. Many backlit mirrors include demister pads and colour temperature adjustment, allowing you to shift from cool, energising light in the morning to warm, relaxing light at night.

Recessed downlights on a dimmer circuit provide general illumination. Position them carefully to avoid casting unflattering shadows — above the mirror line rather than behind where you stand.

Accent lighting — LED strips beneath floating vanities, inside shower niches, or along bath plinths — adds depth and drama. This layer alone can transform a bathroom from ordinary to extraordinary once the main lights are dimmed.

Always ensure all bathroom lighting is IP-rated appropriately for the zone in which it is installed. Your designer or electrician will advise on the specific ratings required.

Materials: Natural, Tactile, and Enduring

Material selection defines the character of a luxury bathroom more than any other design decision. The trend is firmly towards natural materials that age gracefully and feel inherently premium.

Natural stone — Marble, travertine, and limestone are the cornerstone of luxury bathroom design. Large-format slabs with minimal grout lines create a seamless, hotel-like finish. Book-matched marble — where two slabs are opened like a book to create a mirrored pattern — is one of the most dramatic treatments available and is something we have used to stunning effect in several Studio Chenille bathroom projects.

Porcelain tiles — For clients who love the look of natural stone but prefer a lower-maintenance alternative, large-format porcelain tiles now replicate stone with remarkable accuracy. They are non-porous, stain-resistant, and available in sizes up to 1200mm x 2400mm, meaning entire walls can be covered with minimal jointing.

Brushed brass and aged bronze — Warm metallic finishes on taps, shower fittings, towel rails, and accessories add richness and contrast against stone or tile. Brushed and living finishes that develop a gentle patina over time feel more authentic and luxurious than high-shine chrome.

Timber accents — Solid oak shelving, a teak shower bench, or a walnut vanity top introduce organic warmth into what can otherwise be a hard, cold environment. Properly sealed and maintained, timber in bathrooms is both beautiful and durable.

The Spa-at-Home Concept

The desire to recreate a spa experience at home has become one of the most consistent requests we receive at Studio Chenille. Achieving this goes beyond materials and fixtures — it is about creating a sensory experience.

Working with a Bathroom Designer

A bathroom renovation is one of the most technically demanding projects in any home. It involves plumbing, electrical work, waterproofing, ventilation, and precise coordination between multiple trades. The margin for error is slim — a poorly waterproofed shower or incorrectly positioned drain can cause damage that costs thousands to rectify.

At Studio Chenille, our bathroom design service covers the complete journey — from initial concept and budget planning through to material specification, contractor coordination, and final installation. We work with trusted plumbers, tilers, and electricians who understand the standards we expect, ensuring every detail is executed flawlessly.

Whether you are redesigning a master ensuite, a family bathroom, or a guest cloakroom, we approach each project with the same commitment to quality and the same ambition to create something genuinely beautiful. Explore our portfolio to see examples of our work.
